چکیده

SHEPPARD L.J. 1996. How reproducible are the reactions of stress indicators for Sitka spruce treated with acid mist? Phyton (Horn, Austria) 36 (3): (23) (30). Results of previously published experiments based on open-top chambers and field exposure systems with seedlings, mature grafts and physiologically mature trees (<13m tall) of Sitka spruce exposed to pH 2.5 mist are discussed briefly for the purpose of identifying reproducible bioindicators of acid mist induced perturbation, i.e. physiological disturbance causing stress (reduction in performance). None of the bioindicators studied, i.e. visible injury, foliar nutrient concentrations, ion leakage with and without freezing, and growth responded consistently to treatment. Substantial treatment by environment interactions were detected in treatment effects on visible injury and foliar nutrient concentrations. But the enhancement of ion leakage from unfrozen shoots and changes in foliar nutrient concentrations in treated compared with untreated shoots reliably indicated acid mist-induced stress.

Improvements in the Biological Durability of Uk Grown Timbers by Various Wood Modification Techniques

Results are also compared to EN350-1. Results to date indicate that furfurylation and acetylation are capable of improving the durability classification of UK grown Sitka spruce from Not Durable, Durability Class (DC) 5 for control samples to Very Durable (DC1). More interestingly, lower durability classifications were obtained when using UK grown Scots pine, where the treated samples could be ...

Acidic mist reduces foliar membrane-associated calcium and impairs stomatal responsiveness in red spruce.

Acidic deposition can leach essential pools of calcium (Ca) directly from plant foliage. Because of the central role of Ca in environmental signal transduction, disruptions of labile foliar Ca pools could impair physiological responses to a variety of environmental stimuli and stressors. We investigated the possibility that acidic mist-induced depletion of membrane-associated Ca (mCa), which is...

Piperidine alkaloids in sitka spruce with varying levels of resistance to white pine weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

Our objective was to evaluate piperidine alkaloids as potential resistance factors in Sitka spruce, Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr, at risk to attack by white pine weevils, Pissodes strobi (Peck). We sampled 72 seedlings in each of two replicated field trials in the Oregon Coast Range. The seedlings were grown from open-pollinated seeds of putatively "resistant" or "susceptible" off-site parenta...

Changes in Foliar Elements in Red Spruce Seedlings after Exposure to Sulfuric and Nitric Acid Mist

Red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) seedlings were exposed repeatedly at a field site or in a greenhouse~to acidic mist containing the major sulfur and nitrogen pollutants of wet deposition in the eastern U.S.: sulfate alone, nitrate alone or with ammonium ion, and a combination of these ions. Acidities and ion concentrations ranged from below the mean to above the maximum concentration for cloudwa...

Implementing Continuous Cover Forestry in Planted Forests: Experience with Sitka Spruce (Picea Sitchensis) in the British Isles

Planted forests of Sitka spruce, a non-native species from north-west America, are the major forest type in Great Britain and Ireland. Standard management involves even-aged stands, rotations of 40–50 years and a patch clear-felling system with artificial regeneration. However, forest policies support managing these forests for multifunctional objectives with increased diversity of species comp...
